Stephen McCafferty
Stephen is a seasoned HR professional with over
20 years experience gained in the Public Sector, Retailing and
Financial Services. He is a graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University,
has a master’s degree in Occupational Psychology from University of
London, is a Chartered Psychologist and an associate fellow of the
British Psychological Society.
His early career was spent lecturing and in
research before joining the Employment Department and
applying his psychology skills to aid adults to rehabilitate to
the world of work.
Joining the retailer Safeway in 1989 he supported the integration of management
teams following acquisition. In 1994 he joined the HR team re-engineering the
business and was responsible for organisational design, assessment and selection
of key senior staff and the identification of future organisational capabilities
as Safeway sought to establish a greater presence in the volume grocery market.
Headhunted to Standard Life in 1995 he led the people aspects of
organisational change following a significant change in business fortunes
and outlook. Awarded the HR prize for excellence from Cranfield in 1998
for his work in linking HR Strategy to business strategy, Stephen continued
to enhance the role of human resources in business. With regular Board
interface, Stephen was an active member of both the Nomination and Governance
Committee and the Remuneration Committee.
As HR Director, Stephen led significant change including building a
fit-for-purpose organisation prior to demutualisation in 2005 and class leading
HR practices in remuneration, executive development and employee engagement in
preparation for IPO in 2006. In addition Stephen led the difficult people changes
to the staff pension scheme at Standard Life and successfully increased employee
engagement whilst creating greater choice in pensions provision.
