4-CONSULTING E-ZINE

In this Spring edition of our e-zine, we've chosen the theme of communications.

When we write email, letters, memos or reports, do our readers react the way we expect?  In the first of our articles, we look at ways of improving your written communications.

Changes in company law came into effect earlier this year that have implications for your web site and email usage.  We summarise the legal changes and offer some suggestions of what you can do to remain within the law.

Please feel free to forward this e-zine to a colleague.

Effective Business Writing

Are you sure that the people reading your written communications really get the true message and react the way you expect them to?  To be sure that you create the correct impact, you need to put yourself inside the mind of your reader.  Know your reader and ask yourself the question "will my reader get my message?"

Legal Changes for Internet Sites & eMail

The Companies Act 1985 requires your letterhead, order forms and all business emails to include company registration number; place of registration and registered address.  However, a recent European directive has caused the UK government to amend the Act in January this year, whereby limited liability businesses must now display this information on their web sites and on all email.  Our article also discusses appropriate disclaimer notices that you might add to your out-going email.

Recent Successes

Since our last edition, we've undertaken a tenant satisfaction survey for the Housing Department of Inverclyde Council and, assisted DTZ Research & Consulting with some specialist knowledge, we have carried out a survey of Scottish Colleges of Further Education for the Scottish Funding Council

Recently, the Scottish Executive commissioned us to undertake research into measuring and improving employee engagement in the public sector.  We have engaged our partners DTZ Research & Consulting and Business Excellence International to assist us with this project

Training in MS Office applications and project management continue to be in demand and we've delivered a number of tailored courses for our clients, notably the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.  Having developed a Spreadsheet Risk Management manual for HBOS plc, we've developed and delivered a series of "best practice" training courses for their senior managers.

Tell us your view

Almost three-quarters of our respondents to our last edition felt that their organisation had no business continuity plan.

We hope that you will take a moment to answer the following question:

There is much debate among knowledge management enthusiasts about the importance of tacit knowledge which cannot easily be written down. Tacit knowledge is possessed by the people within your organisation.  When they leave they take their knowledge with them denying your organisation any further access to that knowledge. There are ways of sharing tacit knowledge to reduce the dependence on particular individuals.  However, ultimately the largest part of your organisation's knowledge base will be in the minds of your staff.

Do you believe that sharing knowledge should be an organisational value and that staff should be rewarded accordingly?

Answer our question and let us know – all responses are confidential.
