Title
STRUCTURED CABLING
INVESTMENT
Objectives
To upgrade the company's
internal network cabling infrastructure in preparation for an
organisation-wide e-mail facility.
Description
The company ability to use its office communications technology
is severely constrained in significant
areas of its operations by data bottlenecks within the existing
network.
The upgrade to a modern, in-house
LAN and e-mail will enable the company's staff to communicate
more effectively internally and externally with field staff and
customers.
This project will provide the most flexible form of
cable environment required to support anticipated LAN technology.
Project Management
The project will be commissioned by Joe Bloggs and delivered by specialist cable installation contractors.
Scope & Impact
The project will be limited to the office buildings
at 12 Main Street, and 412 Grandview Drive only. The network cable
involved will comprise both vertical "riser" cables within each
building (i.e. the data spine) and the network loops within each floor of
the buildings.
Assumptions
It is assumed that the network patch-panel related
equipment is fully documented and all cables have been tagged at each end.
Constraints
Both properties are listed buildings and planning
consents may be required if cable routes require that skirting, frieze or
walls need to be broken-through.
Business Case
The lack of a comprehensive cable infrastructure
constrain the company from developing a proper office IT technology environment.
This results in a loss of systems and data integration, disenfranchised
staff and a return to piecemeal IT investment.
No IT investment in new systems or processors should
be permitted until the cable infrastructure has been established.
The project should be timed to start immediately after
the IT Strategy Plan has been completed and adopted by the IT Committee. The
project will run for 2 months covering commission, tender and complete.
A budget of £10,000 to £15,000 is anticipated for this
project, based on a rule of thumb of £100 per user and an anticipated
100 - 150 users' access points throughout the buildings involved.
