Task-Based Estimating

Task-based estimating is often described as "bottom-up" estimating.

The estimate is built up by identifying all the various tasks involved in completing the project.  For each task, the estimator identifies the probable time and costs.  The total time and costs for the project is simply the addition of the time and costs for each task.

The key features are:

identify each stage and task in the project
estimate each stage or task separately
use past experience or knowledge

-

refer to all available historic information for past projects

-

refer to any available information from external sources
adjust the estimates in the light of the available staff skills and experience
adjust the estimates in the light of known factors that will impact on the project
compile the total time and costs
remove individual contingencies and create a single, overall contingency
