Project Governance

Project Goverance Principle Governance of project management activity is crucial and has to be observed by everybody involved.  However, the main responsibility lies mainly with the Board of Directors and the Project Sponsors. (Refer to the GOVERNANCE Principle)

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors, or Executive Management team, is responsible for ensuring that projects are approved only if they advance the organisation towards its long-term objectives.

Project prioritisation principle The Board has to prioritise all projects undertaken by the organisation to ensure that in-house resources and financial budgets are utilised to best effect.  A spreadsheet-based resource planner is an effective way of providing an executive summary of resources engaged in projects. (Refer to the PROJECT PRIORITISATION Principle)
The Board has a supervisory role to ensure that project governance is properly enforced by Sponsors and Project Managers.
The Board needs to maintain a "helicopter" view of all projects.   A good executive summary tool is a simple spreadsheet-based "dashboard" that summarises all projects. (Refer to the DASHBOARD page)

Project Sponsors

Project Sponsors are at the heart of all project governance and must:
define the initial idea in the form of a Project Proposal
communicate the "vision" for the project to the project manager
commission the project manager to scope the project, i.e. write the Project Initiation Document ("PID")
coach the project manager on associated ideas
sponsor the PID to the Board or Executive Management team
help the project manager to identify the stakeholders
brief the project manager on the potential staff and budget limitations
ensure that costs and benefits are clearly identified in the PID
chair the Steering Committee meetings
advise the project manager on key business changes that might affect the outcome of the project
ensure that risks and interdependences are -
