Quality Management Principle

The chances of the successful delivery of projects will be increased significantly through the careful management of quality in the project management processes. Quality management is a service and not a policing exercise.

The quality advisor is there to watch peoples’ backs for them. If the quality advisor is not helpful, quality management will be resented and the advisor's efforts will be counterproductive.

If the quality advisor is properly qualified to do it, then they will also be knowledgeable enough about project management to give helpful advice about issues they identify.

Objectives

Project outputs should be right first time or else be re-built

Project outputs should structured such that they improve  each time they are changed

All project management functions are properly fulfilled throughout the life of the project

Our Approach

Everyone associated with a project must be familiar all of the project management principles

Establish a regular programme of meetings for inspection and advice with the project team, project manager, project sponsor and steering committee.  Use a frequency to match the rate of delivery of the project.  There is no value holding these quality management meetings after an output is completed, for, example, if the project lasts only 6 weeks, then monthly or quarterly inspection/advice will have no impact.  The routine would have to be weekly.

In each quality management meeting, make sure that everything is going as it should.  Assess the overall state of the project using colour-coding and update the project visibility function.

The task of the quality advisor is to spot oversights and then to give constructive help; it is not to be a policeman
Establish a reporting routine with the sponsor and the steering committee
Report quality issues.  Prepare proposed actions and a modest estimate of the impact not acting.
