Project Sponsor's Role & Responsibilities

Role

The Project Sponsor makes an important impact through the following responsibilities:
Click Identify the project manager
Communicate the business objective(s), the budget limits and the in-house staff resources limits
Request a Project Initiation Document ("PID") from the project manager
Review and agree the PID with the project manager and the Board of Directors
Empower the project manager
Assist the project manager to -

-

identify the stakeholders
- create the project governance structure
- appoint the project Steering Committee
- agree the reporting cycles and format
- manage the stakeholders' expectations
Chair the Steering Committee meetings
Manage the terms of the PID as you would manage any other supplier contract

Responsibilities

The Project Sponsor is responsible to the organisation for overall success of the project.  Specifically, the Sponsor:
"owns" the project
has overall responsibility to the Board or Executive Management Team for delivering the project - 
- on time
- to budget
- with the anticipated benefits
contracts with the organisation for the successful completion of the project
appoints and contracts with the Project Manager to carry out the project in accordance with the PID
makes "business" decisions for the project
agree the format of progress reporting with the Project Manager
defines the frequency of Steering Committee meetings
reviews and reports - upwards and outwards
